What people are really after when they leave WhatsApp

The reasons come up again and again: the app belongs to an American group, nobody is quite sure what happens to the metadata, and in the end it only does one thing, which is send messages.

Plenty of alternatives answer the first point. Very few answer the last one: once installed, the new messenger does exactly what the old one did, and the group stays as disorganised as it was before.

What Bob does differently

• Encrypted messaging, with audio calls and video calls.
• Events with replies: yes, no and maybe are counted for you, with no need to scroll back through the thread.
• Shared lists that everyone fills in themselves, the classic one being who brings what.
• Lending of objects or money between people who know each other, with a return date and automatic reminders.
• On a computer too, through Bob Web in the browser.

A messenger is for talking. Bob is for keeping track: something that matters does not sink into the thread, it has a place and a state.

Three habits leave the message thread and get a place of their own: the shared calendar, the shared shopping list, and the event planning list.

European and French, and what that actually means

The word European gets used loosely. Three separate things sit behind it.

1. The publisher. Bob is published by SAS BOB BORROW & BACK, registered with the Toulon trade register, based in La Seyne-sur-Mer in the south of France.
2. The applicable law. A French company falls under the GDPR and French law, with the remedies that come with it.
3. The team. Bob was built in the Var and was presented there by BFM TV Toulon Var in March 2026.

So Bob is not a British app. It is a French one, and therefore a European one. That is the honest difference with a provider based outside the EU.

Signal, Telegram, WhatsApp, Bob: who does what

These apps cannot be compared feature by feature, because they are not trying to do the same job. Here is what each one does well, and what it never set out to do.

Moving a group without losing it

Migration almost always fails for the same reason: you ask everyone to give up a habit without offering anything in return. A safer approach is to move what works badly elsewhere first.

• Start with a real event. A birthday, a weekend, a match: something with a date and a list.
• Leave the conversation where it is. Nobody has to quit anything on day one.
• Show the difference once, not ten times. Replies counted automatically and a list that stays current speak for themselves.
• Add lending afterwards. That is the part that makes people stay, because no messenger covers it.

Clubs, parent groups and shared responsibility

In a club or a parent group the question is sharper than it is at home. Whoever runs the group handles other people's contact details, often children's, and carries responsibility for them.

• Not everyone wants to share a phone number. In a large WhatsApp group, everybody can see it.
• The group belongs to nobody. When the person who created it steps down, administration is left hanging.
• Announcements get buried. Training is cancelled and the message disappears under twenty others.
• Attendance is counted by hand. Every week, usually by the same person.

Bob settles the last two directly, and the first two come down to who publishes the app and under which law.

What changes in practice

Three things shift noticeably, and none of them is the chat itself.

1. Replies replace thumbs-up reactions. In a group people answer with an emoji nobody can count. An invitation produces a number.
2. Lists replace messages with bullet points. A list stays current; a message is wrong the moment somebody claims a line.
3. Return dates replace memory. That is the part no messenger covers, and the one you miss fastest once you have had it.
